If the drain lines in your home have poor venting as in figure a for example water rushing down the drains will pull water from nearby p traps. An s trap is named so because it looks like an s on its side it basically consists of a normal trap and then another trap installed right up against it in an upside down fashion as shown below. The toilet s trap arm also referred to as the fixture drain is the pipe between the trap and the vent. A common plumbing defect found in many older houses is an s trap.

What is a plumbing vent. Just as drain pipes remove water and waste from your home the plumbing vent pipe also known as a plumbing air vent removes gas and odors it also allows fresh air into the plumbing system to help water flow smoothly through the drain pipes however no water. There simply isn t room under there small cabinet and a small prep sink to put an s trap made from 2 pipe. These devices normally attach underneath the sink just past the trap ensuring.

However the sink is placed further away. For a 2 inch drain line this distance is usually 5 feet. The drain in the toilet bowl is basically a p trap. What i was planning was to use 1 1 2 pipe for the s trap and put a screw in type vent into the system.

Vents are a major component in a home s drainage system. As you can see the true vent aligns with the stack just behind the toilet. Through the stack sewer gases are carried up to the roof through vent lines. Behind the wall where you can t see a vent line and drainpipe lead to a soil stack which is the control center of the wastewater system.

If the problem just started it s probably a blocked drain or plumbing vent pipe that needs to be snaked out. The only difference between a p trap and an s trap is the horizontal length of pipe on the outflow side which allows you to connect the vent. Today houses are vented through the roof. The vent must rise a minimum distance from the trap that depends on the sizes of the pipes you use for the drain and the vent itself.

The image below illustrates s typical bathroom with multiple plumbing vents. It will need an s trap because the drain comes vertically up from the floor nearly underneath the sink. There s even a wet vent included that connects to the bathtub. Venting allows water to pass out of the drains easily.
