Scuff sanding is the process of lightly sanding a surface in preparation for primer paint and or varnish. Don t use a sanding block for refinishing hardwood it might miss uneven spots in the floor. Taping off a problem area helps but it is still challenging to sand accurately inside such an intricate space and right up to the taped edges without scouring into the adjacent undamaged floor. If you do have to sand between coats of polyurethane on floors because you didn t get to the second coat within the required time frame then that s a bummer.

However the first method gives better results. Move the buffer from side to side across the floor in the direction of the grain overlapping each course by 6 inches. This is an intensive process that strips everything from the floor by grinding it down to the natural wood underneath all that shine. You can scuff sand bare surfaces or even ones that have been already painted or varnished.

Stick a maroon buffing pad to the buffer and put on a dust mask. In order to spot fix a floor you have to contain the sanding and refinishing within a single board or a fixed area bounded by board edges. Scuff sanding not only helps remove the old product but it gives the concrete surface a slightly rough texture so new sealants can bond with the surface. Just kidding but i truly do hate sanding when i don t have to.
