Each grab bar shall be 24 inches 610 mm long minimum and shall be installed 24 inches 610 mm maximum from the head end wall and 12 inches 305 mm maximum from the control end wall.

If you re installing grab bars for a child rather than an adult ada standards call for installers to position the bar between 18 and 20 inches above the floor for 3 to 4 year olds 20 to 25. It is best to install two bars on either side of the toilet seat for maximum stability when the user is getting up or sitting on the toilet seat. Two grab bars shall be installed on the back wall one located in accordance with 609 4 and the other located 8 inches 205 mm minimum and 10 inches 255 mm maximum above the rim of the bathtub. For horizontal grab bars the ada standards require a height between 33 and 36 inches from the finished floor of the bathroom shower or tub. Always attach grab bars to studs or use secure mounting anchors the manufacturer recommends. Generally a 16 in grab bar or a grab bar that is a multiple of 16 16 in 32 in or 48 in works best. Normally grab bars that are fastened to the wall by a toilet are placed at a height of 33 to 36 inches that s 840 to 915 mm.

My recommendation is if it s possible to test it by simulating it with the elderly person who will be using it. The toilet paper dispenser shall be mounted below the grab bar at a minimum height of 19 inches 485 mm. A 42 inches 1065 mm minimum length grab bar is required on the side wall spaced a maximum of 12 inches 305 mm from the back wall and extending a minimum of 54 inches 1370 mm from the back wall at a height of 33 36 inches 840 915 mm. In a transfer shower the bottom of the vertical bar must be 3 to 6 inches above the horizontal bar on that wall.

Be careful with height in toilets and showers the tops of horizontal grab bars need to be 33 to 36 inches from the floor. This bar should extend at least 16 inches above it and be screwed securely into the stud inside the wall. In most cases studs are located 16 inches apart on center. Position two bars on the toilet wall one aligned parallel to the floor and about 5 or 6 inches above the seat this bar should be at least 32 inches long and extend at least 12 inches past the front of the bowl and another bar perpendicular to the end of this horizontal bar.
